LEA-S500 identifies a qualitative-quantitative elemental formula of samples in minutes

Based on the Polotsk-Fiberglass, Belarusian State Technological University (BSTU) opened a laboratory of glass and fibrous materials equipped with a laser elemental analyzer LEA-S500 manufactured by SOL instruments Ltd.

“The creation of such an educational, scientific and industrial space as a part of one of the largest enterprises in the country is an indicator of the high economic potential of scientific support for innovative projects”,- said Deputy Chairman of the Belneftekhim concern Andrei Bunakov.

The unique scientific equipment which the laboratory is equipped makes it possible to conduct researches for improving the quality of glass and fibrous materials, reducing material and energy costs, and ensuring environmental safety in the production of fiberglass and materials based on it. This unique laboratory equipment was demonstrated during the opening ceremony.

The key instrument is laser elemental analyzer LEA-S500 which identifies the elemental (chemical) composition of various solid and powdery materials (natural raw materials, glass, ceramics, metal, and plastic). LEA-S500 is also necessary for the control of impurities and inclusions at all stages of production, as well as for elemental studies of new types of glass-fiber materials. Laser elemental analyzer identifies a qualitative-quantitative elemental formula of samples in minutes. 

A laser is used as a source of excitation of spectra in LEA-S500 (an alternative to X-ray radiation and inductively coupled plasma). The two-pulse nanosecond laser excitation source of the spectra ensures maximum reproducibility of the аnalysis results, allows to achieve record-low limits for the detection of elements and linearity of concentration dependences in a wide range, and ensures accurate and reliable measurements.

Specialists of higher scientific qualification and engineering staff will work on the laboratory equipment.

Modern facilities of Polotsk-Fiberglass OJSC allow producing up to 57 thousand tons of four types of fiberglass. At the same time, the company intends to increase capacity for the production of composites - the most promising modern materials.
